The excuse for absence or (EFA), should be used when you know or you think you are unable to be active for a time span that is more than two week. If you do this, then the dominants will know you are busy and not warn you of inactiveness when you didn't post in a while. It's easy, you just have to fill in the following form.

If for any reason you need to extend your EFA, you can just edit your topic. However, after a day of the date has reached, your post will be deleted to keep the topic tidy. So if you see your post has been removed already, you will have to post again with the new date of your return.
